As July 4th approaches the summer season gets in full swing here in VT. The grass is lush, the trees full of green and the mountain streams run crystal clear. I’ve been a devoted golfer most of my life, though I will admit this life as an innkeeper has kept me from my passion of the game for the last few years. Fortunately, when I do get out, we have a great track here in town at the Stowe Country Club. For those of you who stay with us here at Ten Acres Lodge, we have vouchers available that get you discounted green fees and a Stowe Points card which when used can help you earn free rounds of golf or lift tickets. Ten Acres Lodge and its restaurant, Lagniappe, are pleased to announce that the month of June will begin a series of charitable donations that will attempt to help those in need wherever they may be. This month, Lagniappe will donate a portion of sales for the month of June to the Greater New Orleans Foundation. This foundation, rated 4 stars by Charity Navigator, has established an oil spill fund which is designed to assist with clean up efforts and to help fishermen experiencing financial hardship.

The selection of the foundation was a careful one, ensuring that money sent gets to those in need and not to administrative costs. Owner Frank Wilson remarked, “the connection Lagniappe has to Louisiana is an obvious one so the selection of a charity addressing the oil spill was easy.”

In addition, Wilson says the employees have embraced the concept. “Our employees have stepped to the plate and offered to help as well”, Wilson said. “I’m proud of the quality of people we have working here.”

Customers are encouraged to ask about the foundation when they visit.

Ten Acres Lodge’s Restaurant in local paper

I was delighted to be contacted by a local publication that noticed our ad in the local Stowe VT paper, concerning our newly opened restaurant, Lagniappe. This publication specializes in local events, dining, movies etc. The article is a nice summary of our brief conversation and I want to thank Suzanne Podhaizer, the author, for taking time to talk with me about our new venture.

New Restaurant opens in Stowe Vermont

We were very excited to open our new restaurant Lagniappe, this past weekend. It was a so called “soft opening” with invited guests. To our delight it went very well. The food was praised and the service went great. Comments included: “the etoufee was the best I ever had”, “The sole was awesome”, “Pork Chops were unbelievable”, “Excellent dining experience”, and on and on. We were grateful to all of our guests who took time to give us comments on the food, service and atmosphere. We learned a few things that we will implement soon and we look forward to making Lagniappe a must do dining experience in Stowe. The name of the restaurant, pronounced Lan Yapp, is a great cajun french word meaning “a little something extra”.

As our guests found out, cajun food is not overly spicy. You’ll find it to be full of flavor, but not overpowering. Check out our selections and more at www.tenacreslodge.com We hope to see you!

Plenty to do in Stowe Vt this summer

Well the snow has melted, the mountain has closed and the rite of spring is upon us. Mud season is already finished this year which is good news for those of us who live and visit here. Unlike most Springs, you can come up and enjoy the beauty of a Vermont Spring without all the mud! Flowers are everywhere, trees are in bloom and the town is not crowded. That’s why we call it serene season. Once summer starts, we have an amazing array of events, festivals and activities for the entire family. And here at Ten Acres Lodge, we are located in the middle of it all, without the hassles of traffic and crowds.

Just look at this partial list of things to do this summer:

June 10- 13 International Choral Festival, June 11-13 Mustang Car Show, June 18-20 Stowe Wine and Food Classic, June 25-27 Stowe Garden Festival, July 9-11 Stowe Balloon Festival, July 11 kicks off the Music in the Meadow series of outdoor concerts, July 30-Aug 8 Stowe Summer Arts Festival, July 30-Aug1 Taste of Stowe and Aug13-15 Antique Car Show.

Believe me this is only a small portion of events this summer. In the coming weeks I will give more information on all these events as they approach. Also, if you need a place to stay, consider us at Ten Acres since we are offering a 20% discount on summer rates if rooms are booked before May 15.

Come experience the Vermont tradition of Sugar houses

A great tradition you should experience is the annual springtime ritual of harvesting maple sap. If you come up to Vermont in late March you can learn the process of making maple syrup. We serve maple syrup here (we call it liquid gold) and once you’ve had it, you never have the fake stuff again.

You’ll learn a lot about how it’s made and of course, get to sample the fruits of the labor. You’ll start to understand the reason behind the high cost since it takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. Winter storm warning in Stowe VT

Some people think that just because it starts to get a little warmer that winter is over…then Mother Nature reminds us who’s in charge and dumps a foot or two of snow on us. Well, its looking like another reminder is coming with predictions of 8-16 inches of fresh white stuff on its way. We have a pretty full house at Ten Acres this weekend so I’m sure that our guests will be pleased with their timing. Cross Country ski race in Stowe Vt

The oldest downhill cross-country race of its kind is back for a 65th year! The historical fun race starts at the top of Mt. Mansfield and winds its way some 16km further down, to the picturesque village of Stowe.

That’s how the web site describes the Stowe Derby. Many of our guests here at Ten Acres Lodge like to cross country ski so this event is right up their alley. You don’t have to be a world class skier to particpate. The web site continues…

The course follows the Auto Toll Road for the first 6km before briefly hooking up with existing cross country trails. The last 6km of the course are flat and follow the Stowe Recreation Path.

Choose between the freestyle or the classic race, or do both in the Derby Meister (for experts only)!!! A family friendly race is also available, the Short course. 6km of flat terrain for kids and their families and those who would rather avoid the descent…

Chance of Snow showers turns into half a foot in Stowe VT

Weather forecasters….you gotta love ‘em. Yesterday the forecast was for a “chance of snow showers”. By the end of the day, we had 6-8 inches of new snow. Not that we’re complaining….well I might be since I have to plow and shovel the stuff. And more snow is on the way! The point is, while we do depend on weather forecasts to plan our day and trips, winter weather here in Stowe is largely unpredictable. Microclimates, as they are called here, can mean different amounts in snow in neighboring communities. If you want up to date conditions, check out our web cam at www.tenacreslodge.com

The picture shows what can happen when we have a thaw. The snow on the roof of our shed was sliding down as it melted, then froze like this. It was this way for a week. An unusual sight!
